Speculation has run rampant — along with plenty of outrage — ever since fans learned that Kelly Monaco would be exiting General Hospital with Sam’s death. How would it happen? Would there be any way back from it? Would Monaco even want to come back from it? Well, for better or worse, it looks like we got the answer to at least one of those questions today, and it was probably the biggest one. Because Sam is, indeed, dead.
To be sure, we all pretty much figured out when her death would happen. Once we learned that Sam was a match to donate part of her liver to Lulu, we all knew there was virtually no chance she’d survive the experience. And with the emotional goodbyes Sam said to all of her friends and loved ones last week, it became a guarantee. After that, it was just a matter of how she’d die. A surgical accident? Unforeseen complications?
Surprisingly, Sam made it through the surgery and woke up without an issue. But that just made things even more heartbreaking knowing what was to come. Because she was doing so well after the surgery that Dante proposed to her at her bedside — and she said yes! But then, as Sam was happily telling Alexis about her engagement on October 30, she started crashing. It happened so fast, we don’t even know why yet.
Lucas, Liz, Portia — they all started doing everything they could to resuscitate her. But paddles and CPR weren’t working. Nothing was. And eventually, despite Lucas holding out as long as they could, the doctors realized there was nothing to be done. And with that, Lucas called her time of death. Sam was gone.
As for whether Monaco would want to ever bring Sam back, that’s a whole other question. She hasn’t been quiet about her frustration with the way Sam’s been treated, nor in feeling that this was all “retaliation.” None of it, she’s shared, makes sense to her. There’s still a lot of uncertainty left, but whatever happened behind the scenes, it feels like a return someday could be tricky.
But we can never say never in the daytime world. Jason’s died how many times at this point and come back? For now, though, there’s not much we can do but lay Sam to rest as even fan outrage and protest did little to stop the train of her death once it got rolling. As for Monaco, we’ll be keeping an eye out to see where she’ll land next. If another sudser doesn’t snap her up, we’ll be downright shocked.
