General Hospital Star Sounds Off on Controversial Twist: ‘It Doesn’t Make Sense’

Ever since General Hospital started having Drew ping-pong between shagging Nina and kissing her married daughter, viewers have had, let’s say, feelings. Strong ones. Turns out they’re not the only ones.

“I do understand why it’s touched such a nerve with the audience. It touches a nerve with me, too,” Cameron Mathison admits to Soap Opera Digest. “But I also think it’s a really good soap storyline… and it’s not the first time a story like this has been played.”

True dat. You can see others in the family-affairs photo gallery that follows this article. The trick here, aside from the “ick” factor is that Drew isn’t some “Tad the Cad” bedhopping. On the contrary, Mathison says, “Drew is a good, solid man, and he’s doing things that aren’t in line with his moral compass. He’s cheating on his nephew, in a way…

“That’s shocking to the audience,” he continues. “It doesn’t make sense to the audience… [Drew is] engaging in actions that he’s going to get a lot of crap for.”

He’s gonna take a few punches for it, too, based on Tuesday’s episode, in which Cody hauled off and slugged him. Can Michael be far behind? Drew “is really trying his best to kind of stay away from it, but at the same time, he’s being drawn in,” the actor admits. “I don’t think he means for the two people he’s being intimate with to be related — it’s not like it was a conscious decision. But at the same time, if you look at it sort of face value on paper, sure, I’m sure people are really taken aback by it.”

Mathison can’t relate to Drew’s dilemma, not exactly, but he does hold out hope for him to come out the other side a little bit smarter. “I can’t say that I’ve done anything like Drew is doing right now, but I’ve done things that aren’t in line with my moral compass in real life, and I’ve learned from it and moved on, and just about every single person I know has as well.”
