General Hospital’s Kelly Monaco Replaced as Sam
First there was the report that General Hospital had parted ways with Kelly Monaco and was killing off Sam after 20 years. Then there was the petition from fans hoping to change the ABC soap’s mind. Now comes word via Soap Opera Digest that the actress is being replaced the week of September 16 by Lindsay Hartley.
The temporary switcheroo is nothing new for the General Hospital audience. Hartley, a veteran of Passions (as Theresa), All My Children (as Cara) and Days of Our Lives (as Arianna), has been subbing for Monaco since 2020. Hartley’s most recent appearance in the role was just last month, as Sam’s half sisters Molly and Kristina laid to rest baby Irene (or Adela, depending on which of them you ask).
Thus far, Monaco has not broken her silence about her exit. But she was reportedly blindsided by the news that she’d be leaving Port Charles. As viewers and castmates alike absorbed the shock, they have rallied behind the fan favorite. Maurice Benard (Sonny) went so far as to suggest that Monaco’s departure might really be “a blessing in disguise.”
Going forward, Monaco will likely have her pick of new roles. In fact, The Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives both have the opportunity to re-pair her with former General Hospital leading men. Young & Restless’ Jason Thompson — whose Patrick was once engaged to Sam — is currently without a love interest as Billy. And Days of Our Lives’ Greg Vaughan — whose version of Lucky had a hot affair with Sam — is unlikely to return to Salem with Eric’s endgame. (Here’s why.)
