More than six months after General Hospital wrote off daytime legend Michael E. Knight as Martin Grey, the Emmy winner is on his way back to Port Charles this week, Soap Opera Digest reports.

The character was only supposed to be MIA for three months, but with the shakeups in the show’s writers’ room, Martin’s absence was extended. All’s well that ends well, though. Chris Van Etten created Laura’s surprise brother, and now that he’s working with Elizabeth Korte to steer the ship, “I get to be a new toy for him twice,” Knight tells the magazine. “The best position you can be in on a soap is being the new toy.”

The soap vet is well-versed in the flip side of that particular coin, owing to his long run as “Tad the Cad” Martin on All My Children. “Once you’ve married Dixie three times, you’re — excuse the expression — screwed,” he says. “It’s like, if they bring her back from the dead for the third time and don’t even explain why just so you guys can ride off into the sunset, you’ve been there a little too long. You’ve overstayed!”

Knight’s General Hospital comeback storyline sounds like a doozy. Pro that he is, he won’t disclose exactly how Lucy Coe’s ex reenters the fray, but he does allow that Martin is used in much same way that paprika is in cooking. “You don’t use it a lot, but you use it to sort of spice things up.”
