It’s the end of an era at General Hospital. Kelly Monaco will make her final appearance as Sam McCall this fall, Soap Opera Network reports. What’s more, the character, a frontburner mainstay for more than 20 years, is said to be getting killed off.
The actress made her General Hospital debut back in 2003 following a three-year run on spinoff Port Charles as Livvie Locke. Monaco, the website says, was blindsided by the decision to dispatch Sam to Port Charles’ cemetery. Back when she joined the show, she was given the option of instead taking on the role of Babe Carey on All My Children (which eventually went to Alexa Havins). But, being a diehard General Hospital fan, Monaco couldn’t resist the opportunity to become a cast member of that soap.
Over the years, the fan favorite was paired with one leading man (Maurice Benard as Sonny) after another (Steve Burton as Jason) after another (Jason Thompson as Patrick). Sam is currently seriously involved with Dominic Zamprogna’s Dante. But, as you may have heard, his former wife Lulu is due to wake up with a recast in the role any time now.
Sam’s death is sure to throw the whole canvas off kilter. Currently, her half sisters Kristina and Molly are at one another’s throats over the death of the baby that the former was carrying for the latter and her partner, T.J. Sam and Dante are raising a blended family. And ex-husband Jason just made his second return from the dead.
