Two years ago, The Young and the Restless‘ Chelsea went through a life-changing experience. And it’s one that we rarely see on daytime television. Depressed and suicidal, Chelsea wanted to take her own life. Fortunately, Billy was there to talk her down and convince her to get help. Since then, Chelsea’s worked hard on her own mental health and to make amends to those she hurt. She’s also gotten right back into the drama between Adam and Billy, but that’s neither here nor there.
The point is, it was an important story that still resonates with viewers, which was very much apparent when Melissa Claire Egan commemorated it on Instagram.
“Hard to believe this month marks two years since this very important episode and storyline,” she shared. “Your messages and honesty about mental health and your personal stories have continued to touch and inspire me.”
But the actress didn’t end the message there, going on to speak directly to those who may be struggling or feeling the way Chelsea was up on that rooftop. “Please always remember that you might feel alone, but you are not,” she continued. “You are so loved and you belong here. If you or someone you know are having thoughts of suicide, please call 988 or text HELLO to 741741 to talk to a trained counselor, 24/7, for free. Help is out there and it works, so please reach out and get the help you deserve. I love you very much!!”
And the fans spoke up and shared their own stories, not just letting Egan know how great her performance was, but talking about how it helped them through dark times and the dark feelings that Chelsea went through. And for those who admitted they’re struggling right now, Egan jumped right into the comments with words of encouragement and promised to send resources to help.
Often, daytime TV can be silly fun and a wonderful escape. But sometimes the stories they tell and the actors who tell them can make a difference in people’s lives that resonates for years to come.
