Dr. Rolf is back on Days of Our Lives and he’s here to solve all of Kristen’s problems! Personal, professional, you name it, and he’s got the solution. And when we say solution, we mean that in the chemical sense, because everything, we learned today, hinges on his revolutionary scientific discovery of the century. Check out the full recap here.

With it, he’s going to make Kristen billions at DiMera and heal Sarah’s spinal injury, hopefully getting Brady off the hook. Whether or not that actually happens is still up for debate — Rolf had to look into the matter a bit more first — but already, the show’s pushed things too far.

There are always doctors looking into new treatments for pretty much every illness and injury out there. Spinal cord injuries are tricky, but Kristen could have put Rolf onto researching some specific, cutting edge trial treatment that she’d have to use DiMera’s vast resources to bend the laws and regulations to use on Sarah. Sci-fi-ish, yes, but not out of the realm of possibility. If Grey’s Anatomy can pull experimental treatments out, so can Days of Our Lives.

But to bring Rolf back with a formula like what he described, derived from those dang magic prisms and that can regenerate failed organs, regrow dying tissue, heal pretty much any wound or injury? That’s a bridge way too far. We already know the prisms can cure incurable tumors — that’s how Bo was brought back. And now this type of thing would remove pretty much any dramatic tension from any health related stories.

“Oh no, my heart is failing!”

“No worries, I’ve got a shot for that.”

“Argh! I was caught in an explosion!”

“Here’s a shot.”

“I was horribly disfigured and have amnesia and will need plastic surgery and a way to heal my brain injury!”

“Two shots.”

Right now, for instance, The Bold and the Beautiful is in the process of killing Taylor off with a failing heart. Will she actually die? If we’re being honest… probably not. But at least there’s some dramatic tension there as we wonder if the show will go through with it that just wouldn’t exist with Dr. Rolf’s Revolutionary Revitalization Serum.

Granted, as with anything, if Days of Our Lives wanted to tell a health or injury story, they could just say the serum wouldn’t work in that specific case because… reasons. It’s like with Abigail. Dr. Rolf has been bringing people back from the dead for years, but for some reason, she didn’t qualify for the resurrection treatment. (And that’s why we think he could solve this “Abigail” mystery.)

The same could happen if this serum becomes an actual reality. But maybe it’s just better to stop with the catch-all miracle cures and resurrections. We’ve already lost a lot of the tension when a character dies. We know they’re bound to be back eventually, and these days, it’s usually sooner, rather than later. Remove that tension from any kind of health issue and there’s an entire tentpole of stories that are just gone.

So please, make this new serum go the way of Megan’s failed Fountain of Youth. When Kristen asked Rolf if he perfected it, his admittedly amusing response was: “Look at my face, Kristen. Does it look like I perfected a Fountain of Youth?”

No, and let’s keep it that way!
