It’s easy to imagine the writers doing a new storyline that leaves GH fans wondering: Who shot John Cates?
The character responsible might be concealed and create an attempted murder mystery if John lives to tell the tale.
Of course, John would probably end up in a coma, so it could turn into a situation where only he knows the truth.
The cops might wait for John to wake up and identify the person who tried to eliminate him.
That’s when things could really get interesting, especially if John’s desire to put Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) behind bars becomes more powerful than his desire for true justice.
Sonny might be innocent in this case, but would John pass up the opportunity to point the finger at him and put his enemy away for good?
In other words, John might decide to lie that Sonny is the culprit and give the person who actually shot him a pass.
Perhaps putting Sonny in prison will matter more to John than anything else.
However, there might be a more sympathetic element if it turns out John is protecting the real culprit, too.
What if Danny Morgan (Asher Antonyzyn) shoots Agent Cates for everything he’s put Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) through?
Jason had an odd conversation with Danny about gun safety back when he was hiding out at the boathouse.
It felt significant – like maybe a gun-related incident could eventually happen involving Danny.
What if Danny gets his hands on a gun and fires it at John in a vengeful rage? John might cover up Danny’s guilt and claim it was Sonny who tried to take him out instead.
Regardless, a whodunit story with John at the center would be timely and exciting, so stick with us for more predictions on that possibility.
